3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Specification sheets. The individual item requirements shall be as specified herein and in
accordance with the applicable specification sheet. In the event of any conflict between the requirements
of this specification and the specification sheet, the latter shall govern.
3.2 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first article inspection in
accordance with 4.4.
3.3 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, or
environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the
material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements, and promotes economically
advantageous life cycle costs.
3.4 Materials. Materials shall be as specified herein. When a material is not specified, a material
shall be used that will enable the cable to meet the performance requirements of this specification.
3.4.1 Basic wire. All basic wires used in the construction of the cable shall be of the same type
(see 1.2.1.1). All basic wires shall conform to either MIL-DTL-16878 or NEMA HP 3.
3.4.2 Shielding. When shielding is specified, the cable shield strand size shall be based on the cable
core outside diameter and as specified in table III. The cable core outside diameter shall be based on the
basic wire diameter multiplied by 1.0 for singles, 1.64 for pairs, and 1.95 for triples. The metallic coating
of the copper strands of the shield shall be the same as the metallic coating of the conductor of the basic
wire.
